Frustrated by my paralysed quads. It's a real problem because when I walk, my leg can collapse at random times, and every fall could be serious. Yesterday I fell backwards on the stairs and only the fact that I am really strong saved me. My leg just collapsed.
My internet research seems to point to the femoral nerve being stretched/strangled, but I need to know, should I be walking (risking falls) or just icing the swelling and resting til the quads return.
I called a local sports rehab clinic and made an appointment with one of their physios. I am hoping for some answers and a plan for getting my leg back! My new hip is great, but noodle leg sucks.
Also called surgeon's rooms and am seeing him tomorrow afternoon. So I am hopeful that I will feel less confused soon
Physically, except for falling over from collapsing leg, I am almost 100%, I rode the exercise bike for 30mins and if i could trust my leg could have done elliptical too. I can sit on any seat, etc. Surgery was a complete success.... But the new problem of no quads has to be fixed. Will update after physio today.
Ok...physio appointment was great. Peter was kind and thorough. Went through my history and xrays, immediately took away my cane and gave me crutches (the kind you lean your hands on). He then spent a good half hour working on correcting my gait, as I have developed some horrible habits while trying not to fall.
The crutches are so much safer, and I really should have gone from walker to crutches, eventually to stick. The stick isn't meant to be for weight-bearing, but stability when everything is working properly.
Peter modified the 'raise ankle by pressing knee into bed' exercise by putting a cylinder behind my knee. I was able to raise my foot slightly which gives me something to practice. He assured me that it's normal for the quads to do what they have done, but there's no way I can recover, using a cane, without quads (basically what I thought!)
Did some adductor exercises with my leg in a sling, wow I really have no strength in that ROM.
Also showed me one where I bridge my body by pushing my belly up towards the ceiling (glutes activation-again I have very little to work with).
I am going back Thursday, when he will give me a program to follow. I am super happy because the hospital sent me home at 'A' with no idea how to get to ' D', this has filled in B and C, as well as removing the constant risk of falling.
I will see the surgeon again tomorrow for a check in. I guess he will want an xray when I tell him about falling. I feel ashamed but I was trying to follow instructions!
For now I am allowed to walk, and do the quad extension exercises. Sounds good to me.
